They&nbsp;have been&nbsp;organised into five&nbsp;impact areas identified as priorities by the ESKEN community: Biodiversity, Climate Mitigation, Climate Adaptation, Forests, and Livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;indicators&nbsp;provide&nbsp;guidance on the&nbsp;best available methods to monitor and report&nbsp;environmental and social impacts. Only a third having risk-management policies for deforestation covering the most significant commodities.\u00a0Although the implementation of these policies will improve outcomes, financial institutions now need to think beyond risk management. They should consider how they can incentivise, monitor and report positive E&amp;S impacts generated through their investment portfolios.\u00a0Demonstrating positive environmental and social (E&amp;S) impact will be key to ensuring an increase in blended finance instruments and private capital flows into sustainable practices.<\/p>","title":"Why positive impact indicators?"},{"":"","text":"<p>We are aware of other\u00a0repositories\u00a0of\u00a0indicators\u00a0for measuring positive environmental and social impact, such as the IRIS+\u00a0database developed by the GIIN. We have been in contact with the GIIN in\u00a0the development of this Directory, and we have fed into a number of\u00a0their consultation processes in the biodiversity space.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>This Directory builds on these other initiatives\u00a0and the experience gained by UNEP and UNEP-WCMC\u00a0when working with funds and facilities\u00a0to create a list of recommended\u00a0indicators to be used in the particular context of land use finance.\u00a0The\u00a019 indicators\u00a0have been\u00a0selected\u00a0from\u00a0a\u00a0over 180\u00a0compiled from\u00a0existing funds and wider sustainable investment initiatives, including the IRIS+\u00a0Forest, Agricultural and Livelihoods\u00a0indicators.\u00a0This Directory is a curated short list of land-use finance indicators to accelerate standardisation.\u00a0The process of compiling the selected\u00a0indicators\u00a0was conducted\u00a0through extensive consultation with representatives\u00a0from\u00a0investment funds, banks, donors and non-governmental organisations.<\/p>","title":"Why have we developed this Directory for sustainable land use finance?"},{"":"","text":"<p>This tool is not designed to provide methodologies\u00a0to verify or certify\u00a0positive\u00a0impacts,\u00a0such as\u00a0developing carbon credits.\u00a0However, if this is the desired outcome, then additional resources\u00a0can\u00a0be sought specific to each of the impact areas of interest (e.g.\u00a0Verified Carbon Standard), and these could be used alongside the relevant\u00a0indicators\u00a0which they might align with. For example, a carbon certification scheme could be used alongside\u00a0CLM 03\u00a0<em>(GHG emissions avoided due to non-conversion of native vegetation)<\/em>, or a sustainable agriculture certification in conjunction with LIV 04\u00a0<em>(Number of farmers trained in, and technology transferred for, best management practices in sustainable agriculture\/forest protection)<\/em>.<\/p>","title":"What about verification and certification?"},{"":"","text":"<p>As part of the consultative process with the ESKEN community,\u00a0KPIs were chosen\u00a0based\u00a0on those which were frequently used\u00a0and agreed upon\u00a0broadly across\u00a0the range of stakeholders.\u00a0Although there is not a single indicator for sustainable agriculture,\u00a0different aspects of sustainable agricultural\u00a0financing\u00a0can be measured under a number of\u00a0indicators\u00a0in the Directory.
